Zach's Set
--------
Tommy James & The Schondells - I Think We're Alone Now - Tommy James & The Schondells Anthology
Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now - I Think We're Alone Now (EP)
The Birthday Massacre - I Think We're Alone Now - Looking Glass (EP)

I prefer the version by The Birthday Massacre, but its not exactly an impartial pick.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust - Crackle

The original version far outstrips the Peter Murphy's cover Bowie's voice is much stronger and carries the song much better than Murphy. Though Peter Murphy does take the song and make it uniquely Bauhaus.

David Bowie - Space Oddity - Space Oddity
Peter Murphy - Space Oddity - iTunes Exclusive

The original of this song is a classic and even after 40 years holds up with all the emotional weight it carried in '69. Peter Murphy adds a layer of etherealness and "space" to the song with the heavily electronic rendition.

The Sisters of Mercy - Temple of Love (Extended Version) - Some Girls Wander By Mistake
Technova - Temple of Love - Music Inspired by The Sisters of Mercy

The one of the big hits from The Sisters. This song is a classic of goth rock and the Technova remix, which is a classically early 90's electronica track seems a bit off. Though the rendition of he main riff by Technova using a beat machine and synth really sticks out.

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt - The Downward Spiral
Johnny Cash - Hurt - American IV : The Man Comes Around

Cash's version carries so much more emotional weight than Reznor did. While both songs are crushingly depressing, the sound of the unaccompanied acoustic guitar and the gravelly nature of Cash's voice just carry the weight of the song so much more.
